EXPECTED OUTCOMES

This symposium aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of secondary stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation, encompassing both pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies and determining when to switch to NOACs, comparing their bleeding risks. Learners will gain in-depth insights into the optimal timing and frequency for diagnosing and intervening in AF patients post-ischemic stroke. Additionally, participants will receive an overview of the challenges of diagnosing NVAF in post-stroke patients, the use of AF detecting patches or Holter monitors, and the importance of multidisciplinary management in preventing secondary strokes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Understand current recommendations for the detection of atrial fibrillation in patients after an ischaemic stroke
  • Gain insight into the optimal timing and methods for AF detection to ensure timely diagnosis and intervention - Holter - AF Patch.
  • The AF-CARE pathway, comorbidity and risk factor management, stroke and thromboembolism prevention, symptom reduction through rate and rhythm control, and dynamic patient evaluation and reassessment.
  • Selecting appropriate oral anticoagulation, antiplatelet, and combination therapy based on clinical scenarios and bleeding risk
  • Understand when to switch to NOAC Myths and challenges around anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation Role of anticoagulation in low-risk patients with AF and its impact on stroke and cognitive function
  • Role of anticoagulation in low-risk patients with AF and its impact on stroke and cognitive function
  • Discuss the risk of venous thromboembolism in patients with AF and the importance of early anticoagulation in reducing the symptom burden in these patients
